A HEREFORDSHIRE primary school has been evacuated after the smell of gas was reported.

Fire crews were called to Brampton Abbotts Primary School, in Ross-on-Wye, as parents were told "do not panic".

The school, in Brampton Road, said on its Facebook page that people might have seen a fire engine outside the school, adding: "Please do not panic. Everyone is OK."

It said a smell of gas was reported and children were "swiftly evacuated", with a fire crew quickly at the scene.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said a crew from Ross-on-Wye was called at 11.35am on Wednesday (December 1) to investigate the smell.

Firefighters said the room was ventilated, but no one was injured and no other emergency services attended.

The school, which has around 130 pupils, said the fire service isolated the gas supply before giving permission for children and staff to return to the building as a boiler engineer was called.

"The boiler is brand new and fitted with state-of-the-art detection equipment.

"We can therefore only conclude that the mystery smell must have come from outside the school."

It thanked the children who were "calm and well-behaved throughout", as well as the fire crew, boiler maintenance engineer and the staff who helped evacuate the school.
