BIRD flu has been confirmed at a second poultry farm in Herefordshire, with a stern warning issued to all owners.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said all birds at the farm in Clifford, near Hay-on-Wye, would be killed after the contagious H5N1 strain was found.

It does not pose a big risk to humans, the NHS said, but has been known to infect and kill people around the world in the past.

And with Christmas less than a week away, Avara Foods has said it doesn't expect supplies for the big day to be affected.

Avara Foods, which runs the former Sun Valley factory in Hereford, said: "We can confirm that a turkey farm in Herefordshire, within the Avara supply chain, has had Avian Influenza confirmed on site.

"The incident is being carefully managed alongside APHA and Defra, but we emphasise that there are no concerns about consequences for human health.

"The farm was not rearing turkeys for Christmas and we do not anticipate any impact on supply.

The flu meant a second 10-kilometre control zone was put in place last Friday in Herefordshire with the aim of it stopping the disease spreading.

Those rules, which also cover how birds are transported, were on top of a 10-kilometre zone around a farm in Shobdon, near Leominster, where flu was also found.

Those rules mean all birds, whether at a poultry farm or a home, must be kept housed.

A Herefordshire Council spokesperson issued a stern warning to owners, telling them to keep birds contained and not to allow them to roam free.
