TWO charities have been given funding from the Hereford Times to support their work.
The Living Room and Phoenix Bereavement Service were hailed as good causes worthy of help in our Readers' Choice grants scheme.
Both received readers' votes that won them a share of £20,000 being provided by the Gannett Foundation, the charitable arm of the Hereford Times publisher's parent company.
The Living Room (also known as Ethos – Extending the Hand of Support) was given £407, while Phoenix Bereavement Service was given £294.
The Living Room is a café, a community larder and a safe community space in Commercial Road, Hereford.
It aims to make things better for people on low incomes, those experiencing isolation or lacking in support or community connections.
Our grant will help convert the rear of the Living Room building into showers and washing facilities for people who are homeless. Funding will also go towards turning a small outside space into a garden.
Chief executive Mel Groves said: "Thank you to everyone who nominated us and voted for us to receive this money. Thank you also to the Hereford Times, who provided the grant."
It is the second time this year that the Living Room has been supported by the Hereford Times.
The charity has been receiving donations from readers through our Christmas Appeal 2021, which has reached its target of raising £2,000 to send festive parcels to local families in need.
Phoenix Bereavement Support, based at the Fred Bulmer Centre in Wall Street, Hereford, supports children, young people and their families when someone close to them dies.
Our grant will help to buy new equipment and activities for its newly formed wellness groups for 11 to 15-year-olds.
Linda Jones, the charity's chair of trustees, said: "We would like to thank all the readers who voted to support our work with Herefordshire children and young people when someone close dies.
"We are delighted and grateful to receive the funds from the Hereford Times."
