A MOURNER who was left with broken ribs after crashing on his way home from a wake has been banned from the roads.

Marcus Edmond Depear admitted drink-driving when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

Police were called to the A465 near Munderfield after Depear lost control of his red Mitsubishi Colt and crashed into the verge at 9pm on August 6, prosecutor Shafquat Reaz said.

Depear was arrested after failing a roadside breath test and taken to Hereford County Hospital, where an evidential blood test revealed he had 133 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80.

George Cousins, for Depear, said the 32-year-old had been to a wake in Malvern that day, where he had drunk a couple of pints of beer before driving home.

"He remembers very little," Mr Cousins said.

"He was taken to hospital and stayed there for four or five days with broken ribs.

"He has not driven since, and his friends and managers drive him to work. He is not worried about driving, but knows he has done something wrong and knows he should be punished."

Depear, of Enderby House, Bromyard, was fined £400 and disqualified from driving for 14 months. He must also pay costs of £135 and a £40 victim surcharge.
