A PEDESTRIAN has been seriously injured after they were hit by a lorry in a Herefordshire village.

The crash happened in the northbound carriageway near the war memorial, a police spokesperson said.

The A49 was closed for several hours overnight with the pedestrian receiving trauma care from ambulance staff after the crash.

West Midlands Ambulance Service received a call from the police reporting a collision involving a lorry and a pedestrian on the A49 at Bridstow in Herefordshire at 8.19pm yesterday (January 23).

An ambulance, a paramedic officer, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic together with two BASICS doctors from Mercia Accident Rescue Service (MARS) were responded to the scene. 

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “When ambulance staff arrived on scene they found off-duty nurses and police officers caring for the pedestrian, a man, who was in a serious condition.

“The man was given a thorough assessment by the team of medics who found he had sustained serious injuries. The man received trauma care on scene to stabilise his injuries before he was conveyed by land ambulance on blue lights to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, a specialist trauma centre, for further emergency treatment.”

The A49 was reopened at 3.30am this morning, a police spokesperson confirmed.
