A long-serving Hereford firefighter has said her farewells as she retires after 32 years with the service.

Crew commander Philippa Denton has spent almost all of her time with Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service in the city, apart from a short spell at Evesham.

"Pip was our first transgender firefighter, 10 years ago,” said chief fire officer Jon Pryce.

"I’d like to pay tribute to her bravery and hard work, leaving us a better and more tolerant place.

"Pip, thank you for all you have done."

Area commander Jon Butlin, who presented Philippa Denton with her retirement certificate, commented on the legacy that will remain after her departure and wished her all the best for her retirement.

CC Denton, who was one of the crew on duty at the Sun Valley fire in Hereford back in September 1993 when two firefighters lost their lives, hopes to do some travelling in her retirement.
