THE bomb squad has been called to Hereford after a suspected hand grenade was handed in at the police station.

A cordon has been set up, with Bath Street closed by West Mercia Police.

Inspector Tony Freemann told the Hereford Times that the device appears to be a Second World War-era Mills grenade.

But with the bomb squad at the scene, it was not the first time they've been in Herefordshire.

Bomb squad called to Hereford industrial estate

A bomb disposal unit was called to a Hereford industrial estate after suspected ordnance was found on New Year's Day in 2020.

The metal shell was found in a field near an old ordnance storage building in Rotherwas by dog walkers enjoying a ramble.

"We came across this shell and rang the police," one walker said.

"They attended and called a bomb disposal unit, who said the item was a mortar round which had already been fired and was safe."

A police spokesperson confirmed an explosive ordnance disposal team had been sent to the site of the former Royal Ordnance Factory on January 1.

The shell was confirmed to be a spent mortar, and bomb disposal experts took it away for safe disposal.

Bomb squad's controlled explosion in Hereford

Two roads in Hereford were closed by police after an explosive device was found in September 2020.

Police closed Chapel Road and Fordshill Road in Rotherwas, with the bomb squad called. A cordon was put in place and businesses evacuated.

It was thought nine bombs were found in total, weighing around 15kg each

West Mercia Police said they were believed to be dormant explosives dating back to World War Two.

They were moved to a nearby farm and blown up.

A hand grenade was handed into Hereford police station after a man dug it up in his garden, officers said in April 2019.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said a cordon was put up around the police station while they waited for the Army's bomb disposal team to carry out its work.

The grenade was checked and found to be empty and removed from the scene, an officer said.

Bomb squad descends on house after grenade found in garden

A bomb disposal squad was called to a Hereford street after a grenade was found in a garden.

Troops were scrambled to Longmeadow in Lower Bullingham after the occupants of a house found a hand grenade while gardening in May 2020.

The grenade, known as a Mills bomb, was used by the British Army in the First and Second World Wars.

It was safely recovered by troops from 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps.

Army scrambles bomb squad to Herefordshire town

The bomb squad was scrambled to Ross-on-Wye after it was believed a 1940s bullet was found in July 2021.

The Army's bomb disposal team was called to the south Herefordshire town after the item was reported to West Mercia Police.

It was believed a 1940s bullet was found in the Lakeside Drive area, and the Army said "at no time was there any danger to local residents".

"The item of ordnance was safely removed from the site," an Army spokesperson said.

Hereford road closed after bomb found

Part of a Hereford industrial estate was evacuated and a cordon is in place in September 2017 after the discovery of suspected phosphorous grenades.

Officers in Hereford evacuated an area around Rotherwas Industrial Estate after a report of an explosion at a premises in the industrial estate at around 4.30pm, where excavation work was taking place.

No injuries were reported.
