I WRITE in response to Dr Breeze’s letter of February 3, “No maths?”

What a shame his doctoral degree did not include verification of sources in its curriculum!

Aside from the forensic scrutiny of NMITE’s curriculum by its validating partner, a simple check would highlight the intense qualitative review required of any new curriculum by central government regulators prior to being awarded Higher Education Institute status (which NMITE has achieved).

RELEVENT LETTERS:

Of course maths is taught at NMITE! Clearly, Dr Breeze has conflated the words “entry requirement” with “curriculum,” not even considering publicly available information (website, prospectus) to prevent his error.

NMITE has chosen not to require maths at A-level as a prerequisite for admission.

A known deterrent to young women wishing to become engineers, UK maths at A-level is neither consistently taught, nor particularly appropriate for engineering (but GCSE maths is, and NMITE requires good GCSEs).

That’s why, in many UK university engineering programmes, maths are force-fed at the start of the degree.

Known globally, with derision, as the “UK math/physics death march,” foreknowledge of this gauntlet is a deterrent to many and a clear contributing factor to the UK’s enormous shortage of engineers (and to having the lowest number of women engineers in Europe).

Instead, NMITE teaches our PhD-designed maths components by embedding them throughout our curriculum.

Applying the highly regarded practice of learn-as-you-do, NMITE maths, taught this way, ensures our engineers can apply the right maths, at the right time, for the right problems.
