PETROL prices in Hereford are still rising as the war between Russia and Ukraine continues, despite the national average cost of a litre falling.
Fuel prices have dipped by a fraction of 1p from record highs today (March 22).
Figures from data firm Experian Catalist show the average cost of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts on Monday was 166.6p, down from 167.0p on Sunday.
The average cost of a litre of diesel fell from 179.0p to 178.7p over the same period.
This comes amid speculation Chancellor Rishi Sunak could announce a temporary cut in fuel duty of up to 5p per litre in Wednesday’s spring statement.
Responding to the latest fuel price figures, RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “Monday marked the first day this month where average fuel prices didn’t reach new record heights.
“To put things in perspective for drivers, the delivered wholesale price of petrol currently stands at £1.30 and diesel at £1.48.
“With prices this high before retailer margin and 20 per cent VAT are added, it’s clear we are in a tough place when it comes to being able to afford to drive.
“This is why it’s crucial the Chancellor takes decisive and meaningful action in his spring statement that helps hard-pressed drivers and businesses.”
In Hereford, Co-op’s in Holmer Road was the most expensive yesterday selling petrol for 176.9p and diesel for 183.9p.
Sainsbury's is the cheapest place to go for petrol in Hereford at present, with petrol priced at 163.9p per litre, which is four pence more expensive than it was four days ago.
