THE price of fish and chips is expected to reach £10, and a Hereford chip shop has shared their concerns with customers.

The cost of living is set to rise this month and the price of starchy foods such as potatoes and sought-after fish such as cod will spike.

The price riseis due to a huge rise in cost, the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) said.

Since October last year the price of cod has risen by 75 per cent while the price of haddock has gone up by 85 per cent.

Whitecross Fish bar, in Whitecross Road, Hereford, said it must increase its prices.

A spokesperson said: "It is unsettling but necessary that we had to increase our prices last week to the highest we have ever had to before to keep up with what is going on in the world right now.

"We always try to source the best ingredients, but our costs on fresh fish, lamb and chicken kebab, pies, potatoes have increased dramatically.

"Flour, oil, gas, and electricity have almost more than doubled."

The shop's large fresh fish costs £6.40, but in comparison a large piece of cod in Sainsbury's cost £6.86 yesterday (March 7), said the spokesperson.

It asked customers to continue to support local businesses as much as it could during these difficult times and thanked those who have shown continued loyalty and support.

"We are not trying to make more money but to simply stay open, keep our staff working and to continue serving our customers," said the spokesperson.

"Please shop locally where you can."
