A CLUBBER has been branded an 'absolute idiot' by his solicitor after drink-driving in Hereford.

Jack Bishop entered a guilty plea to magistrates in Hereford.

He had been seen on CCTV getting into his silver Volkswagen Golf and driving through a red light in Commercial Road after he was turned away from a nightclub on April 16, prosecutor Melanie Winterflood said.

Bishop pulled up on a petrol station forecourt in the street, where he was spoken to by police and arrested after failing a roadside breath test.

An evidential breath test in custody revealed he had 64 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Philip Cornell, for Bishop, said it was a night out gone wrong for the 21-year-old self-employed carpenter.

"He and friends came to Hereford to go shopping and ended up in a nightclub in the evening. What was worse was that they realised they could not get home and found their phones were dead for some reason, so they jumped in his car and drove to the garage to get a phone charger and call a friend to pick them up.

"He is a totally responsible person who behaved in a totally irresponsible way. He drove from Wetherspoon to KFC and he is an absolute idiot. All he had to do was walk, it was less than 500 metres."

Bishop, of Ddole road, Llandrindod Wells, was fined £229 and disqualified from driving for 17 months. He must also pay costs of £135 and a £34 victim surcharge.
