THE winner of the Hereford Times's search for the county's cutest pet has been revealed.
Of the 236 entrants of the competition, launched on April 14, we were able to whittle these down to a shortlist of 84.
A public vote, launched on May 5, then saw readers vote for the pet they thought was cutest.
And now the top three have been revealed, and the winner crowned.
Runner-up: Crumpet the rabbit
Zoe Sharpe, of Garway, near Ross-on-Wye, was absolutely thrilled to learn that her pet rabbit Crumpet had been voted in the top three of Herefordshire’s cutest pets, despite just missing out on the top spot.
Miss Sharpe and her partner Matt have had Crumpet since just after he was born in March 2021.
Her family have always had pets of various types around the house.
She said: “We’re both from families of animal lovers. We’ve only lived together for a couple of years and Crumpet is our first pet, but my family had dogs, cats, and guinea pigs, all sorts really, so I am used to having animals in the house.
“We couldn’t commit to a dog because we both work full-time so thought a rabbit would be less high maintenance.”
Miss Sharpe fell for Crumpet the minute she saw him.
Crumpet was adopted by the couple from a family in Monmouth. He was one of a litter of six bunnies and Miss Sharpe said if she could’ve she would’ve adopted all of them.
She said: “If it was up to me, I would’ve adopted the whole lot of them, but I don’t think Matt would’ve let me.”
“He’s just absolutely gorgeous. He has such a chilled, and loving pet and I fell in love with him as soon as I met him.”
Miss Sharpe works as a primary school teacher at Peterchurch Primary School and Crumpet is a favourite with her pupils, even though they have never met him.
She took some seasonal photos of Crumpet for the Christmas and Easter holidays and her pupils loved it.
“My class know all about Crumpet and love him, even though they’ve never met him.
He’s a bit of a celebrity with my class and a crowd-pleaser. I bring in photos of him every so often to show them.
“I haven’t brought him into school yet, I think 20-odd kids swarming all over him might be a bit much for him.”
Miss Sharpe said that it was fantastic that Crumpet was voted as a runner-up in the competition.
She said: “I think that Crumpet is the cutest pet but I am obviously biased.
“It’s great that there are people in the county that agree with me.”
Runner-up: Benji the puppy
One of the runners-up of the Hereford Times Cutest Pet competition admitted she never thought she’d get into the top three.
But when you look at the cute picture of Jack Russell puppy Benji, it’s no surprise he won the hearts of the readers who voted for him.
Sophie Powell, who lives with her parents in Almeley, near Kington, said she got Benji in the winter when he was only eight weeks old.
Now six months old and continuing to grow, the family have been left wondering if Benji is crossed with another breed due to his “humongous” ears.
Speaking to the Hereford Times on a walk around the picturesque village, Miss Powell said: “We haven’t had him long, we only got him about January or February. We haven’t had him long really, he’s a little puppy.
“He was only about eight weeks when we got him.”
On house training, she joked: “He’s still a bit naughty, he’s funny though.”
It’s not the first dog for Miss Powell and family though, she said they had a dog, Jasper, a Jack Russell crossed with a King Charles spaniel, for nine years, but he died aged nine in October.
“We always called him Henry the Hoover because he was eating everything all the time,” she said.
It was lonely in the house after that, so the decision was made to get Benji, who she now enjoys walking in the beautiful north Herefordshire countryside.
“He’s a pure Jack Russell, but people think he might have some Alsatian in him because his ears are humongous. He grows so fast, but his ears are huge.”
She added: “He’s mad, he’s always giving kisses.
“If you leave him for an hour, you’d think he hadn’t seen you for months – he’s mad.
“He’s always full of high energy and spirits.”
Out of 236 entrants, Benji finished as one of the runners-up.
Miss Powell said it was her nan who found out about the competition and she said just give it a go.
“We don’t normally enter competitions, but we thought he’s cute so we’d put him in. We didn’t really think much more of it until we got the email.”
She then told her mum the good news.
Winner: Pink Ears the lamb
The winner of our cutest pet’s competition is a little lamb from a smallholding in Herefordshire.
Pink Ears is the much-loved two-month-old lamb belonging to the Mills family, who live near Kingsland, and now the cutest pet in Herefordshire.
Her mother, 12-year-old ewe ‘Archie’, was bottle-fed from birth and has turned into quite the adult sheep and now mother.
Her owner Doreen Mills, 82, said she is a quiet but confident soul, who leads the family’s other sheep when they are on the move.
Archie even knows her name and holds her feet up for Mrs Mills to clean.
But she can be quite bossy with other lambs and won’t let them take her milk to make sure Pink Ears and her sibling get enough.
Mrs Mills has developed a bond with Archie since her birth.
Pink Ears was the first lamb she had in two years and when she was born, one of her legs was bent back, meaning it was a difficult birth.
Mrs Mills stayed behind while her husband went to the market in Hereford with some of their other lambs.
When they were both settled Mrs Mills went to the market and when she came back two hours later, Pink Ears was running around and happy to be alive.
Pink Ears has taken after her mother and is a happy lamb but has not been handled as her mother had.
The family are very fond of this little lamb, and she stood out straight away with her large pink ears, hence the name.
Mrs Mills’ grandson, who works with sheep on a farm in Brecon, decided to enter Pink Ears into the competition after she featured in the Hereford Times some weeks ago.
The family did not expect to hear the news that Pink Ears had won.
“I didn’t believe him when he told me at first,” said Mrs Mills.
“But I am very pleased, and so is my grandson.”
She had the original competition photo of Pink Ears framed and now she said she will have to get a bigger frame for this one.
The family will now receive a stylish trophy and a package of prizes worth £100.

She was 2 years old and wasn’t house trained, had never been walked on a lead and we were her fourth home. He only has 6 teeth, he has already used most of his 9 lives, he has been in the toilet, tumble dryer, rolled down the stairs in a washing basket to name a few! He is unique and has brought us so much joy and happiness.
