A spokesperson for the Methodist Church, a Protestant Christian denomination, said it had become apparent that Christ Church, in Edde Cross Street, was "financially unsustainable".
The closure has been confirmed at a church council meeting.
No decision has yet been made about the future of the building, but a thanksgiving service will be held before the closure and the congregation would be helped to find other places of worship.
