A COUPLE running a Herefordshire pub were due to retire but have decided to keep going for the sake of their staff.
Mac and Val Hirst run The Nags Head, in Canon Pyon, also known as The Wonky Donkey Bar and Kitchen, but they were aiming to bring their careers to a close this week.
But the tenant due to take on the pub pulled out last minute leaving the pair in a tricky situation.
The couple have been serving locally-sourced food and ales in their village pub with cosy log fires, a function room, large garden, and play area.

They did not want the pub to close jobs so agreed to stay open a little longer.
“We have worked really hard to build a good business here and don't want to see the pub close, the locals to be without there pub and also our wonderful staff had been told they would be employed by the new tenant,” said Mr Hirst.
“If the pub closes, they would all be out of work, they are like family to us and we would not want that to happen to them.”
