ONE of Hereford United's rising stars is recommending newly qualified motorists put themselves firmly in the driving seat by taking further training to increase their skills.
Luke Webb, one of the club's rising stars, believes drivers who have recently passed their test should embark on the pass plus course to prepare for a lifetime of safe driving.
Luke, aged 21, took the course after he passed his driving test.
"I did not feel comfortable driving until a good week after I passed my test because when you are learning you are dealing the absolute basics. After your test, when you do this pass plus course, you really learn what driving is about," Luke said.
The pass plus course is available through Herefordshire Council and is open to drivers who have passed their test within the last 12 months and there is no age restriction.
"The instructor is not instructing you. He or she is just sitting there to monitor you so you are driving on your own and it is not until you drive on your own that you really grasp driving," said midfielder Luke.
He believes the best part of the course is that it covers aspects of driving not covered in the test, such as motorway and night driving and poor weather.
"I think you have just got to be more aware especially with the weather conditions. If it is raining don't rush and concentrate all the time."
Luke believes the course can add to the sense of security a new driver feels.
"I failed my driving test first time and I think that was a blessing in disguise because I learned so much between my second and first test and subsequently between taking my second test and pass plus.
"I think without that I would have felt a lot less safe in myself."
Herefordshire Council offers a £50 subsidy for a new driver taking the course providing they live in the county.
The overall cost can vary as driving instructors charge different amounts.
The course consists of six modules - driving in town, on rural roads, on dual carriageways, on motorways, at night and in all weathers.
The course has to contain at least six hours of practical training although instructors can give theory lessons about aspects such as driving on ice and snow.
New drivers can benefit financially from doing the course as some insurance companies will reduce premiums. More information is available on 01432 260946.
