HUNDREDS gathered in a Herefordshire market town to welcome in the new King.

Ross-on-Wye heard choirs sing and a trumpet play as people applauded King Charles III at 4pm yesterday (September 12) in its Market House.

The Proclamation of Accession is the formal method of publicising the accession, sharing the news that the monarch has died and that the heir has acceded to the throne.

The flags flown at half-mast in Herefordshire since the Queen’s death were raised briefly to their full height to mark the start of His Majesty’s reign.

The mayors of Herefordshire's market towns were despatched from Hereford Cathedral to read the proclamation to their communities in Bromyard at the Market Square, Kington at the Market Hall, Ledbury at the War Memorial, Leominster at Corn Square, and Ross-On-Wye at the Market House.
