A BUS service in Herefordshire will be revived next month, but only because another is being axed.

Earlier this year, DRM Bus said it would stop running its 420 route between Bromyard and Worcester on weekdays. That came just months after Stagecoach cut the 132 services between Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye via Newent.

It was a decision made because the route was not being used enough and was making a loss.

RELATED NEWS:

Coun Nigel Shaw and passengers wanted the route saved, with DRM Bus's decision left only one bus in each direction every day. These are run by Worcester-based First Bus, with the outbound journey at 7.05am and inbound at 5pm.

But from November 7, First Bus's timetable shows it will start running a service from Bromyard to Worcester at 9.45am and a return journey at midday – but only on Tuesdays.

The Hereford Times understands that Herefordshire Council wanted to find a "cost-neutral" solution with Worcestershire County Council not willing to financially support the route.

But that is only possible by redeploying axing the 671 Bromyard to Ledbury service on a Tuesday.

OTHER NEWS:

"The 671 has very low usage, an average of less than three return passengers per day over the last six months, and there is an alternative service the 482 that operates from Bromyard to Ledbury on a Thursday," an email from Herefordshire Council said.

"While it's not ideal to withdraw one service to operate another this is a far better use of valuable resources."

Herefordshire Council has not yet written off being able to reinstate a 420 service five days a week.

It means that there will now only be a 672 service from Bromyard to Ledbury on a Thursday, and 673 service on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
