A DAREDEVIL care assistant from Leominster has taken to the skies with a wing walk.

Rebecca Walsh, who works at Leominster Bupa Care Home, was aiming to raise money and awareness for charity, Scope. The charity provides physical and emotional support and advocates for creating a society of equality for disabled people.

She completed a charity wing walk at Aero Superbatics in Cirencester, where she was strapped onto the wing of an aeroplane which ascended 800 feet into the air, in memory of two siblings she lovingly cared for.

Scope is very close to Rebecca’s heart, as it helped her look after a brother and sister duo, Dave and Pat, who lived at Leominster Bupa Care Home and she was very close to. Their recent passing inspired Rebecca to raise money to thank the charity for its support.

The stunt took place in late September, but Rebecca has been preparing for the big moment for several months as she has an enormous fear of heights.

When asked about her adventurous wing walk, Rebecca commented: “The feeling of freedom being up there on the wings of an aeroplane was amazing. The team thought I was a little crazy, especially as I am scared of heights, but they also think it’s a lovely gesture and an awe inspiring challenge to take on.

“At first, I was very nervous, but I pushed myself to do the wing walk because Dave and Pat always taught me to believe in myself. It was an incredible way to pay tribute to them both and to raise awareness for the charity that is so dear to me.”

Pat Mallet, 83-year-old resident at Leominster, also has a very close relationship with Rebecca.

“What Rebecca did is so inspirational and thoughtful," she said.

"Throughout the lead up to the challenge, she kept us all updated on her plans. I’m very grateful that she recorded the event, as I loved watching it back at the home. I found it so exciting.”
