A multi-role machine, Lightning is capable of carrying out air-to-surface, electronic warfare, intelligence gathering and air-to-air missions at the same time.
With a maximum speed Mach 1.6 and capable of flying up to 50,000 feet, the aircraft, based at RAF Marham in Norfolk, combines advanced sensors and mission systems with low observable technology, or "stealth", which means it can operate undetected in hostile airspace.
