VILLAGERS in Herefordshire have told police of their concerns after spotting tractor drivers using mobile phones while behind the wheel.

It states that it is illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving, but councillors in Ewyas Harold say tractor drivers are ignoring laws.

Minutes of October 11's meeting said Clerk Mark Hearne would pass on the council's concerns to the police.

Ewyas Harold Parish Council had talked about its concerns over tractor drivers breaking the law while travelling through the Golden Valley village.

Tougher sanctions for the use of handheld mobile phones while driving any vehicles on public roads have come into force since 2016.

Penalty points for offences went up from three to six, while the fixed penalty notice fine jumped from £100 to £200.

The police can stop you if they think you’re not in control because you’re distracted and you can be prosecuted, potentially for serious offences such as driving without due care and attention.

Drivers who passed their test in the last two years will lose their licence if caught, and drivers can also be taken to court where they could be banned from driving and get a maximum fine of £1,000.

OTHER NEWS:

Bus or lorry drivers face a maximum fine of £2,500.

The law on phone use applies even if you are stopped at traffic lights, queuing in traffic, or supervising a learner driver.

Exemptions include calling 999 if it's unsafe or impractical to stop, you're safely parked, you're making a contactless payment while stationary or you’re using the device to park your vehicle remotely.
