ARE you really a Herefordian if you didn't go to or take your child or grandchild to a party at Jungle Mania?

For those of us of a certain age, it was the go-to venue for parties, celebrations, or just a day out on a wet weekend.

The much-loved and now long-closed Hereford venue opened in Station Approach in December 1993, promising fun and frolics for children with safety and security designed to give mums and dads a bit of a break.

The brainchild of Nikki and Andrew Young, Jungle Mania was aimed at children aged from five to 12, promising a venue where they could "let themselves go and have the time of their lives".

The three-level adventure playground featured cushioned play areas and walls covered in cartoon paintings, with trained staff on hand to supervise youngsters.

"Jungle Mania has been well-sited to give parents the chance to leave children over five in the staff's care, close to the railway and coach stations or, perhaps, while they do their shopping," the Hereford Times said at the time.

Children were 'tagged' and booked in and out, with electronic safety doors designed to stop escapees.

Parents could also stay and watch their children from the first-floor viewing area, or from the 'Jungleteria'.

With play areas built by Bouncing Ball Ltd, specialists in adventure playgrounds and soft play equipment, Jungle Mania also offered a special party area for birthdays and celebrations, while a party host was provided to keep children entertained.

Popular with families for many years, Jungle Mania closed and the building was demolished as clearances for redevelopment took place in the Station Approach and Edgar Street area of Hereford.
