DOZENS of people have been jailed for Herefordshire crimes in the last year.

From sex attackers to thieves, we have taken a look back at 2022 to bring you this round-up of all the prison sentences we have reported on in the last 12 months.

February

David Goodridge

Sex offender David Goodridge was jailed for 12 months in February after he was caught with hidden mobile phones and a secret Instagram account.

He admitted breaching his sexual harm prevention order and failing to comply with the notification requirements of the sex offenders register when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

Goodridge, 37, had been made subject to the order after being convicted of sexual assault and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, prosecutor Elizabeth Blacklock said.

He is required to notify police of internet-capable devices and any social media usernames in his possession within three days of acquiring them.

But a spot-check found two mobile phones in his home, one of which had been used to access an Instagram account that Goodridge had failed to tell police about.

Callum Smith

A Hereford man was jailed for more than six years in February for supplying cocaine.

An investigation found that between September 2021 and January 2022, Callum Smith, 22, was responsible for the distribution of wholesale amounts of cocaine.

Smith, of Princess Avenue, Hereford, was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison yesterday (Wednesday) at Worcester Crown Court.

West Mercia Police said Evidence gathered revealed his customer base was in excess of 100 people and included sub-dealers who dealt drugs on his command to their own networks.

Matthew Griffiths

A shocked dad appeared ashen-faced in February when jailed for making the 'most appalling' indecent images of children being raped.

Repeat offender Matthew Griffiths had been convicted of similar offences in 2005 and Worcester judge Nicolas Cartwright, speaking at Worcester Crown Court on Wednesday, said the defendant had plainly not been rehabilitated, asking him how he would feel if his own children were treated in a similar way.

The 42-year-old, who was said to still enjoy the support of his wife, admitted making indecent images of children at category A (the most serious level), category B and C and having extreme pornographic images involving animals. In total there were 5 images at category A, 10 at category B and 4 at category C and eight extreme pornographic images.

The judge in his sentencing remarks said the ages of the victims in the category A images were seven to nine years old, 10 and between 14 and 16.

March

Benjamin Wyatt

A Herefordshire man was jailed in March for holding a knife to his girlfriend’s throat and threatening to kill her during a New Year’s Eve argument.

The victim was left crying hysterically and gasping for breath after Benjamin Wyatt’s attack, which was captured in a mobile phone audio recording, prosecuting barrister Sally Cairns told Worcester Crown Court.

She played the audio to the court, and the muffled sounds of crying and screaming could be heard as the kitchen knife was held against her throat and she begged him to stop.

June

Mariusz Stanislaw Wyzkiewicz

A Hereford man was jailed after 'repeated' breaches of a protective order.

Mariusz Stanislaw Wyzkiewicz was convicted of two offences when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

The court heard the 39-year-old had breached a restraining order by contacting a woman he is banned from contacting by a restraining order imposed in October 2020 in Hereford on May 16 without reasonable excuse.

Leonard Wheatcroft

A sex offender from Hereford has been jailed for 10 years by a crown court judge.

Leonard Wheatcroft, 80, was sentenced 10 years in prison in June after being found guilty at trial for non-recent sex offences.

Wheatcroft, of Belmont Road, Hereford, appeared at Worcester Crown Court on Wednesday (June 15).

Detective Constable Leah Lowe, of West Mercia Police, said it was a challenging and complex investigation which took several, intensive years.

Paul Chamberlain

A Hereford man was jailed for three years in June after pleading guilty to being concerned in the supply of class A drugs (heroin and cocaine) in October last year.

Paul Chamberlain, 50, of Litchfield Avenue, appeared at Worcester Crown Court, on June 15 to be sentenced.

During an investigation by the Hereford proactive team into county lines drug dealing, Chamberlain was identified as a key figure in the supply and distribution of drugs into the county from the West Midlands using his home address as a base.

Luke Berry

A drunken and swearing Hereford man was hauled up before the magistrates after lying in a doorway and assaulting a police officer.

Luke Berry entered guilty pleas when he appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster in June.

The court heard that Berry, who is subject to a community protection notice, had failed to comply with the notice by lying in a doorway, stopping members of the public from entering a venue in Hereford while swearing and shouting at them, causing alarm and distress, on June 21.

Patricia Lewis

A woman who attacked two people in Herefordshire was jailed in June after failing to comply with her community order.

Patricia Lewis was proven guilty in her absence by magistrates in Birmingham at an earlier hearing.

The court heard the 21-year-old had failed to comply with the requirements of a community order imposed by magistrates in Hereford by failing to comply with instructions given at supervision on April 5 and failing to attend an appointment on April 7.

Marius Serbanescu

A thief was jailed in June after stealing hundreds of pounds worth of goods from Hereford's Asda supermarket.

Marius Serbanescu entered guilty pleas when he appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster.

The court heard the 36-year-old had been caught with an article for use in the course of or in connection with theft, namely a tin foil lined bag, in Hereford on July 2.

July

Ioan Graham Hughes

A teacher from Herefordshire was jailed for 12 months in July after sending an explicit picture to a teenage girl.

Worcester Crown Court heard how Ioan Graham Hughes, 35, had caused the victim to suffer psychologically after sending the messages over an 11-month period.

Prosecution barrister Michael Aspinall said the teacher of 12 years had messaged the pupil online and said he was lying in bed and really aroused.

He sent a naked picture with just a towel around his waist – but Mr Aspinall said it was "clear he was aroused".

Sarah Bevan

A carer from Herefordshire was jailed for six months in July after stealing £6,500 from a severely disabled patient.

Worcester Crown Court heard how Sarah Bevan, 39, pleaded guilty to fraud by abuse of position after the patient's daughter noticed unusual transaction from the bank account.

Some £500 had initially been stolen, which prosecution barrister Morgan Pirone said was for flowers and a wedding photographer. This was paid back, but upon further inspection, the daughter noticed at least another £6,500 had been taken, and believed it was a lot more.

Shane Pickersgill

An attacker who stole beer from a Hereford supermarket was jailed by magistrates in July.

Shane Pickersgill entered guilty pleas when he appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster.

The court heard the 30-year-old had assaulted a woman by beating in Hereford on April 9 and stole a four-pack of San Miguel lager and a bottle of Peroni lager from Marks and Spencer in Hereford on May 4.

He had also failed to surrender at Hereford Magistrates Court on May 25 having been released on bail in criminal proceedings by Hereford police on May 4.

Benjamin Clarke

A flasher who exposed his genitals to a teenager and dogwalker in a busy Hereford street has been jailed for 12 months.

Worcester Crown Court heard how Benjamin Clarke, 36, had flashed at five different woman across a three-day period in May 2022.

The offences took place in Devon, and in Hereford's Commercial Road, all during daylight hours.

August

Charles Taylor

A Hereford man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for non-recent sexual offences.

Charles Taylor, 68, of Ross Road, Hereford, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on August 9 for non-recent sexual offences against a male child and an adult female.

The offences occurred between 1984 and 1998.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Leah Lowe, spent 12 months gathering evidence which proved critical to convicting Taylor.

Martin Mossey

A sex attacker was jailed in August after assaulting a woman in Hereford.

Martin Mossey appeared before magistrates in Worcester for sentencing after admitting five offences.

The court heard the 67-year-old had assaulted a woman by beating in Hereford on May 23, and used threatening, abusive, or insulting behaviour with intent to cause harassment, distress, or alarm towards another person, and used threatening, abusive, or disorderly behaviour within the sight or hearing of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm, or distress on May 24.

He had also sexually assaulted a woman aged 16 or over by sexually touching her without consent and attempted to sexually assault a woman aged 16 or over by attempting to sexually touch her in Hereford on May 24.

September

Adam Prendergast

A London man was sentenced to six years in prison in September for a string of burglaries in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Adam Prendergast, 33, of Blakes Road in Peckham, was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court to six years in prison for the burglary of nine homes; four of which were in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

He was caught by officers in Herefordshire after he had broken into the homes of elderly and vulnerable people and stolen their cash, jewellery and silverware in April.

Jonathan Tisdale

A burglar with an "appalling" record was jailed after stealing a charity box from a Hereford business.

Jonathan Tisdale entered a guilty plea when he appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster.

The court heard the 48-year-old had burgled Herefordshire Fire Protection Services in Hereford's Mortimer Trading Estate by entering as a trespasser on August 30 and stealing a charity box.

Tomasz Romanko

A thief was jailed in September after stealing while subject to a suspended sentence order.

Tomasz Romanko entered a guilty plea when he appeared before magistrates in Worcester.

The court heard the 42-year-old had stolen clothing worth £212 from TK Maxx in Hereford on September 9.

Naheed Plumridge

A Herefordshire thief was jailed after stealing two lazy spas and an egg chair from a morrisons supermarket and driving while banned from the roads.

Naheed Plumridge entered guilty pleas to five charges when he appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster.

The court heard the 48-year-old had stolen a Lazy Spa worth £300 from Leominster's Barons Cross Road Morrisons supermarket on May 10, a second Lazy Spa worth £300 from the same supermarket on May 16, and an egg chair worth £275 from the same supermarket on May 24.

October

Andrew James Cooke-Edwards

A dangerous sex offender was jailed for life in October after abducting, raping and threatening to kill a vulnerable young mum in Hereford.

Andrew James Cooke-Edwards sat by the river Wye for almost two hours before he chose his 23-year-old victim and lured her into the woods behind the sewerage works, Worcester Crown Court heard.

He was jailed for life with a minimum term of more than nine years for what prosecution barrister Matthew Butt said was the "brazen abduction of a vulnerable, young woman in broad daylight".

Shane Evans

A thief was jailed after repeatedly stealing from Herefordshire shops.

Shane Evans entered guilty pleas to six charges when he appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster.

Mitchell Starkey

A Herefordshire man was jailed after taking a trip to Cornwall without telling probation.

Mitchell Starkey admitted one count of failing to comply with the requirements of his post-custodial supervision when he appeared before magistrates in Worcester.

The court heard the 25-year-old had failed without reasonable excuse to comply with the supervision requirements imposed following his release from a period of imprisonment.

Macaulay Stephens

A sex offender was jailed in October after breaching court orders in Herefordshire.

Macaulay Stephens appeared before magistrates in Hereford for sentencing in October after he was convicted of one count of failing to comply with notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register and one of breaching a sexual harm prevention order when he appeared before magistrates at an earlier hearing.

The court heard from prosecutor Eleanor Peart that the 27-year-old, who is a relevant offender under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, had failed without reasonable excuse to comply with his notification requirements in Wigmore, Herefordshire, during April 2022.

Audi Carr

A burglar was jailed after stealing from a hereford butcher's shop.

Audi Carr admitted one count of possessing a class B controlled drug when he appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster in October and was also sentenced for one count of burglary and one of theft from a shop.

Joshua David Newbury

An abusive Hereford man was sent back to prison in October after committing more offences.

Joshua David Newbury admitted on count of using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of or provoke violence, and one of breaching a criminal behaviour order when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

Andrew Mills

An abusive man was jailed after repeatedly breaching his criminal behaviour order.

Andrew Mills entered guilty pleas to one count of breaching a criminal behaviour order, one of assault by beating, one of using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour, and one of possessing a controlled drug when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford in November.

November

Richard Watkins

Three members of a drug gang that met up in Ross-on-Wye were jailed for a combined total of 30 years for trafficking cocaine worth around £1.6 million.

Richard Watkins, 43, from Ebbw Vale, was stopped by police driving a pick-up truck after meeting with Daniel O’Hara, 47, from the West Midlands.

Undercover officers witnessed the two meet in Ross-on-Wye and exchange packages and Watkins was later found with 3kg of cocaine in the footwell of the vehicle.

Steven Mason

A man was jailed for a serious assault in Hereford.

Steven Mason, 33, of Rolle Street, Exmouth, was sent to prison for 10 years when he was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court in November.

On March 27, 2021, Mason attacked six people who were gathered in and around a car parked on Watery Lane, Hereford.

Weapons were used in the attack and the victims needed hospital treatment for serious injuries, West Mercia Police said.

Jason Wargen

A prolific Herefordshire Prosecco and wine thief was jailed in November after committing a spate of thefts.

Jason Wargen entered guilty pleas to 26 charges when he appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster in November.

Luke Fenn

A Herefordshire thief was jailed after he was caught in possession of a knife in a busy street.

Luke Fenn appeared before magistrates in Hereford for sentencing in November after pleading guilty to one count of possessing a knife in public, six counts of theft from a shop, and two of failing to comply with a community protection notice at an earlier hearing.

Zackery and Jessie Biddle

A pair of prolific fly-tippers have been jailed for their part in dumping "enormous amounts" of rubbish on a Herefordshire caravan park.

Zackery Biddle, 23, and Jessie Biddle, 26, both of Openfields, Bromyard, were handed lengthy prison sentences when they appeared before Worcester Crown Court for sentencing in November.

Ben Prothero

A Herefordshire sex offender was sentenced to 24 years for the rape and abuse of children.

Ben Prothero was sentenced in November at Birmingham Crown Court to 24 years following his conviction for multiple sexual offences.

The 26-year-old of Metcalfe, Ross-on-Wye, pleaded guilty earlier this year to 17 offences, which related to crimes he committed between 2008 and 2020.

Joshua Symonds

A thief was jailed after repeatedly stealing from Herefordshire shops.

Joshua Symonds was convicted of seven counts of theft from a shop when he appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster.

December

Mark Smith

An abusive man was jailed after smashing a window at Hereford Cathedral.

Mark Smith entered guilty pleas to one charge of criminal damage, one of using threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm, or distress, and one of being drunk and disorderly when he appeared before a district judge in Kidderminster in November.

Thomas Gwilliam-Carter

An electrician from Herefordshire who distributed videos of himself raping a young girl on the internet was jailed for almost 16 years in December.

Thomas Gwilliam-Carter, 39, from Leominster, was identified by National Crime Agency investigators after child abuse images he’d posted were found on devices belonging to a U.S. suspect arrested by the FBI.

Chat logs showed that Gwilliam-Carter, using the online pseudonym "keepedging247", told other paedophiles on the Wickr platform that he planned to drug a child to make raping her easier.

Marc Smith

An attacker was jailed after smashing windows at an iconic Hereford building.

Marc Smith appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster for sentencing in December after entering guilty pleas to one count of criminal damage to property valued under £5,000 and one count of common assault at an earlier hearing.

Jack Davis and Ben Scotford

Two men were sent to prison in December for a conspiracy to deal drugs in Herefordshire.

Jack Davis, 33 and of Stoke Lacy, near Bromyard, and Ben Scotford, 36 and of Hereford, pleaded guilty to all charges, West Mercia Police said.

Davis was given a five-year prison term and Scotford was handed a 30-month sentence, both for conspiracy to supply class A drugs when they appeared at court

Graham Stephens

An animal sanctuary boss who kept animals in shocking conditions was jailed in December.

But Graham Stephens, the owner of registered charity Little Meadow Animal Rescue, has walked free from court as he launched an instant appeal against his jail sentence.

Owls, dogs, rabbits and donkeys were among the animals kept in cramped conditions and not given suitable drinking water at the Tenbury Wells sanctuary.

Douglas Baker

A Hereford man has been sentenced to three years in prison following his conviction for multiple sex offences.

Douglas Baker, 70 of Marlbrook Road, Hereford, was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court on Wednesday, December 14.

He pleaded guilty earlier this year to five offences which he committed between 2019 and 2022.

Chad Smith

A prolific shoplifter who stabbed a man as he tried to make off with stolen goods has been jailed for more than two years.

Chad Smith, 40, was jailed after committing a string of 15 thefts from shop across Hereford, as well as assaulting two police community support officers and failing to answer to bail.

Luke Arnold and Jack Thompson

Police have released pictures of two drug growers caught after officers raided a barn at a farm in Herefordshire.

Police found 353 cannabis plants when they raided the farm building near Ross-on-Wye, Worcester Crown Court heard as the pair were jailed.

The two growers, Luke Arnold and Jack Thompson, had been renting the building at Phocle Green Farm, with Arnold using a fake name on documents.

Nathan Harrison

A Hereford sex offender who abused a seven-year-old girl has been jailed for 13 years.

Nathan Harrison, 37, abused two girls across a six-year period in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Worcester Crown Court heard.

Judge James Burbidge said Harrison, who has more than 70 previous convictions, abused the girls who now realised they had been groomed. He was aged 13 when the offending started.
