Now less than five weeks away, the Coronation of King Charles will be marked with public events around Herefordshire.

There will be a big-screen showing the ceremony on Saturday May 6 from 11am to 4pm on Hereford’s Castle Green, as part of an event organised by Hereford River Carnival and supported by Hereford City Council and events firm Ration Studios.

They suggest attendees bring a picnic and blanket or chairs, and promise dancing, entertainment and activities for all the family.

On the Sunday, the Shack Revolution, the “industrial wedding venue” off the city’s Union Street, will be turned into a World War Two bomb shelter for a “Coronation Blitz Party”, With live swing music, burlesque cabaret and vintage DJs, and catering by The Beefy Boys. Tickets for the event, for which timings are yet to be confirmed, are £20.

Hereford resident Kelly Mills, who has organised previous events at Holmer Manor Close in the north of the city, is planning an event on the street on the Saturday that will likely feature “bangers, booze, bunting, bingo, games, tombola, quiz and fun”.

“The plan is to watch the Coronation at home then have the party, until whenever it comes to a natural end,” she said, “Anything we raise, we donate to a charity of the street’s choice.”

In Ledbury, the town council is organising a street party in the High Street on the Bank Holiday Monday, May 8, with live music, games, crafts, dog show as well as a range of food and drinks. More details of the day will follow on the council website.

Leominster Community Centre will be showing the Coronation live from noon, with “complimentary refreshments and celebratory nibbles throughout”.

The Gateway Cinema in Ross-on-Wye is hosting a screening of The King’s Speech followed by a “Best of British Feast” on Monday May 8.

Holme Lacy Village Hall is hosting a King’s Coronation Lunch on the Sunday between 1 and 6pm, with a free hog roast lunch for adults, and barbecue for children, plus “fun and games throughout the day”.

The coronation.gov.uk website meanwhile lists two other events in the county, in Clehonger and Eardisley.

The Clehonger Parish Forum Facebook group says its Coronation Big Lunch on Sunday May 7 will take the form of a bring-your-own picnic at the Village Hall followed by a range of entertainments, running from 12.30 to 6pm.

Eardisley’s Coronation Bring and Share Big Lunch is being held at the village’s Millennium Green, also on the Sunday.
