ONE of Hereford’s favourite family restaurants has been re-established as a market stall nearly 15 years after it closed.

Ivor and Sylvia Vale first set up The Marches in Union Street in 1972, and now their grandson Matthew Davies is using their old recipes to bring the popular eatery back to life.

The New Marches offers takeaway quiche, salad, scones at its stall in the Butter Market as well as supplying catering for events.

“The Marches was the first healthy food restaurant in Hereford. It was an instant take-off and became very popular – it was regular to have long queues outside. The place holds a lot of special memories for the people of Hereford as a place where they remember being taken as a treat,” said Mr Davies.

His grandparents owned The Marches until Mrs Vale passed away suddenly in 2007.

The New Marches has now been in business for two years and has quickly gained popularity. It will be part of the Hereford food festival later this year, which celebrates independent businesses in the city.
