Military cadets from across the county will parade in front of His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, Mr Edward Harley OBE CStJ, the King’s personal representative in the county, to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
The parade will take place on the day of the King’s Official Birthday on Saturday, June 17 at 5pm. The parade takes place on Castle Green and is open to the public.
Three hundred Cadets from the Sea, Army and Royal Air Force Cadets and the Combined Cadet Forces of Hereford Cathedral and Lucton Schools will be on parade.
This is thought to be the first time that the Cadet Forces from Herefordshire have paraded together and all of the cadets are keen to take part to show their commitment to the King who is the Commander in Chief of the Military Forces of the country.
The cadets have been practising for this parade for several weeks, and as one cadet said – ‘we are really looking forward to the parade, our instructors have been superb and we are determined to put on a good show for the King and our unit’. The parade will be commanded by cadets.
The parade will be preceded, at 4pm by a flypast of a Hurricane aircraft of the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight followed by a musical Sunset Ceremony played by the RAF Cosford Volunteer Band.
The Sunset Ceremony is now purely symbolic and steeped in history and traditionally marks the lowering of the flag and the end of the soldiers' day.
The parade will mark the start of Armed Forces Week in the county, which will also feature Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum Open day – Suvla Barracks on Sunday, June 18; AF Flag Raising in High Town and the market towns at 11am on Monday, June 19, and a talk by Scott Booth – Laguna's Spitfire – at The Courtyard at 7pm.
Throughout the week there will be an exhibition from the Hinton Veterans' Art Group at The Courtyard, and on Saturday, June 24 the SSAFA stadium on Widemarsh Common will be the venue for matches between Herefordshire FA and Army FA.
