Professional colleagues of Peter Jinman have been paying tribute to the Herefordshire councillor who died last Thursday (May 25).
Coun Jinman was president of both the British Veterinary Association (BVA), in 2002-03, and of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), in 2010-11.
He was awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to the veterinary profession, and also chaired the Government’s Farm Animal Welfare Committee for ten years up to last December.
Current RCVS president Dr Melissa Donald said: “Peter was a personal inspiration and role model, and one of the reasons I got involved in veterinary politics.
“He was held in great affection by RCVS colleagues and staff, who have described him as being always happy to help and a pleasure to work with, as well as being extremely erudite and knowledgeable.
“He will be missed by us all.”

BVA president Malcolm Morley said: “Widely respected, Peter was a pillar of the veterinary community, always there with wise advice or a kind word.
“His dedication to his work, the profession itself and the animals he cared for was undeniable. Peter will be sorely missed but his tremendous legacy to the veterinary profession will live on.”
Peter Jinman also chaired the Addington Fund, a benevolent society for farmers, and had previously chaired the Farmers Club.
In yet another string to his bow, he was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration, and for over ten years ran his own firm, PCJ Consulting.

Locally he chaired Ewyas Harold Group Parish Council, on which he served since 1992.
“Despite many competing priorities for his time, Peter never lost sight of the needs of the parish, and the local community were fortunate to have an advocate who worked tirelessly on their behalf,” parish council clerk Mark Hearne said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are now with his wife Gill and their family at this very sad time.”
