A HEREFORDSHIRE radio station could be taken over by one of its competitors.

Sunshine Radio which has been operating in the county since 2007, is in talks with Bauer Media Group about a possible takeover. 

Bauer is a privately-owned German company which operated a number of media-related operations in 13 countries, reaching 200 million customers worldwide. 

Locally, it runs Free Radio, a regional group of radio stations in the West Midlands that are operated as part of the Hits Radio network. Previously, Free Radio Herefordshire & Worcestershire was known as Wyvern FM.

A merger announcement publushed by Irish regulator, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), states: "The CCPCC has cleared the proposed notification of a proposed acquisition of certain assets from Virginia Murfin, the sole shareholder of Sunshine FM Limited and Norgate Limited, that comprise the business known as Sunshine Radio, by Bauer Media Audio LP, acting by its partner Bauer Media Audio Limited.

"The Commission has formed the view that the proposed transaction will not substantially lessen competition in any market for goods or services in the State. The Commission will publish the reasons for its determination on its website no later than 60 working days after the date of the determination and after allowing the parties the opportunity to request that confidential information be removed from the published version."

A Bauer representative confirmed to that discussions were underway.
