A PORTUGUESE restaurant is set to replace a popular diner in the Herefordshire town of Ross-on-Wye.
Gelatis, an American-style diner in Ross-on-Wye, will be closing its doors on September 6 due to energy price hikes – but a Portuguese family will be taking over the building to serve authentic peri peri chicken.
Customers will be able to eat in and takeaway, with the restaurant’s main objective to serve “fresh and healthy food”.
The name of the new restaurant has not yet been revealed.
Owner Tina Knapman said in a heartfelt Facebook post announcing the closure: “It’s been very hard work and so fun building my little business but sadly the energy price hike has made it impossible to carry on.”

Mrs Knapman told the Hereford Times: “It dawned on me that come September, I won’t be able to pay my debts off. It’s very sad, but there are very nice plans for the place after we close. It’ll be great to have traditional Portuguese food in Ross, made authentically by a Portuguese family.”
Gelatis is a family-run American-style diner on Broad Street in Ross-on-Wye, that has been serving up family favourites like hamburgers, hot dogs, jacket potatoes, lasagne, sandwiches, toasties, ice-creams, and milkshakes since it opened in 2019.
After closing Gelatis, Mrs Knapman will be returning to her previous job as a childminder, offering before and after school childcare cover from her home.
