TWO bakeries near Herefordshire have been named among the best in the UK.
The Times’ list of the 49 best bakeries in Britain has been compiled by local chefs and bakers who have recommended their favourite places for artisan bread, perfect pastries and sweet treats galore.
The Angel bakery in Abergavenny and Kate’s bakery in Hay-on-Wye both made the list, taking the 43rd and 46th spots respectively, after being selected by Mikey Lewis, owner of Heist Chocolate in Cardiff.
The Angel Bakery started trading in 2016 directly from their bakery on Lower Castle Street in Abergavenny. They handmake long-fermented sourdough breads and pastries.
Mr Lewis told the Times: "I had the best coffee of my life at the Angel Bakery, and I recommend dunking one of their brown butter cookies in yours. Also order a baguette and a fig, walnut and fennel sourdough.”
Of Kate’s bakery on 18 Lion Street, he said: "this is an “off the beaten track” jewel in Hay-on-Wye. Expect sensational and ludicrously underpriced pastries, cakes cut tarts and breads. Loosen your belt, resistance is futile.”
