A HEREFORD man is set to be honoured by a musical performance next month.

On September 5, Peter Dyke will be performing a special organ concert to celebrate the life of Tim Symons.

Mr Symons was a member of Hereford Cathedral’s music department for almost 25 years until he died last September after a short illness. This concert, which will mark the first anniversary of his death, will feature a wide-ranging selection of music celebrating Mr Symon’s passions and his work at the cathedral.

Alongside music by the Bach, Mr Dyke will play a Fantasia by William Byrd, another of Mr Symons' favourite composers. In a nod to two of his other great interests, film and railway, Richard Rodney Bennett’s music from the film Murder on the Orient Express will also be played.

Geraint Bowen, director of music at Hereford Cathedral, said: "Tim was a highly-respected colleague firstly as a lay clerk in our cathedral choir for over 15 years and then our liturgy and music administrator. He loved the cathedral and its music and is much missed by us all.

"Everyone is very welcome to join us for this celebration of Tim’s distinguished contribution to the musical life of our cathedral."

The concert will form part of the lunchtime organ concert programme which runs throughout the summer on Tuesdays at 1.15 pm. Admission is free with a retiring collection and large-screen video projection is available at all concerts.
