A RARE ‘barn find’ of forgotten photographic images and ephemera are to go on show in Hereford on Saturday (September 23). 

The find was discovered by the Hammond family. Father Geoffrey and son Richard were well-known studio photographers and most of their work has been archived at Herefordshire Records and Archive Centre.

Richard, now in his mid-80s, always suspected there were more treasures beneath a pile of items in his garage. The family has agreed for the find to be exhibted 'as found' at the Hereford History Day event in the Town Hall before it’s passed on for professional conservation work.

“We hope it might persuade other visitors to see what treasurers they have hidden away," she said.  

Elsewhere, one of the last red GPO motorbikes, rescued by postman Peter Mayne for his Postal Museum, will also be on display, while BBC researcher and presenter Nick Barratt will give a glimpse of life behind the scenes on Who Do You Think You Are? and present the awards to the city’s first Young Historian.

There will also be a History Supermarket run by local groups.

“With an Elizabethan History SLAM!, historic city tours, and a civic procession through High Town - not to mention tea and cakes – there’ll be something for everyone interested in history,” added Ms O'Mahony.

The Mayor of Hereford, Councillor Jacqui Cardwardine, added: "I am delighted to be involved with Hereford History Day. The rich heritage of our city and county is certainly worth celebrating and the event provides many exciting ways to do this.

"We look forward to welcoming many visitors to the Town Hall on September 23."

The event, which takes place between 11am and 4pm, is sponsored by Herefordshire Family History Society, Hereford City Council, Jackson Properties and Wye Valley Brewery.
