DESPITE enjoying watching films, I struggle to go to the cinema as often as I would like.

That's due to a number of things - work and family life getting in the way and the cost of living meaning that going to the flicks is way more expensive than it used to be, especially if you want popcorn and a drink as well. 

Sadly, I never went to The Loft in Hereford despite meaning to plenty of times - unfortunately, the independent cinema suddenly closed in June.  

However, when I was invited to go to the stage screening of Les Misérables at The Gateway Cinema in Ross-on-Wye, I was delighted to take up the opportunity.

I must admit, I did not know the cinema existed, despite it closing in on its fifth birthday, and it seems as if I'm not alone. Posting on the Ross-on-Wye Notice Board on Facebook, Heather Evans said she recently went to the cinema as she hadn't been before.

"There weren't many others there and it struck me that maybe people don't know about it," she said.

People commenting on the post mentioned that maybe it was due to the old films being shown, which I can understand.

However, my experience was fantastic and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to try something different. 

The boutique cinema is run by Labels Shopping, with access via the KFC car park. 

As soon as I entered, I was struck by how beautiful and clean the auditorium was.

Myself and my wife went as part of a Les Misérables cinema experience. The night started with canapes and a glass of Prosecco, which you were able to enjoy while listening to Andy Reiss and Sarah Ryan, who have both starred in Les Mis, performing classic songs.

They then answered questions before you were escorted into the cinema to watch the musical.

A total of 50 luxury seats accompany the cinema, consisting of one and two-seater sofas. There is no issue of lack of legroom or discomfort - just a lovely seat where you can relax and enjoy the show. 

As it was a musical, I was expecting there to be an interval, which would have provided an ideal opportunity to sample the drinks and snacks.

Instead, the show carried on for a full two hours 45, which did test my stamina. However, the fantastic show and relaxing seats definitely made up for it.

Looking at the forthcoming programme at the Gateway, there is definitely something for everyone. 

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is on Thursday, October 26, while the whole family can watch Coco+Spooky Hot Chocolate during half term on Tuesday, October 31. 

The Gateway will then be celebrating its fifth birthday with a screening of Bohemian Rhapsody on Wednesday, November 1. Meanwhile, for rugby fans, all matches are being shown up until the final on Saturday, October 28. 

The cinema can also be used for a wide range of events.
