I HAVE long been puzzled by the name Capuchin Lane in Hereford (High Town to West Street). Old Herefordians have always known it as Cabbage Lane.
I have done some research and found that a map dated 1321 shows the lane from the cathedral to High Town named as Caboche Lane.

The word “caboche” is a Middle English word (and also Old French) meaning cabbagehead.
It would be good if the council could consider renaming it either Caboche or Cabbage Lane which would reflect its history.
