I AM just one of the many volunteers working to clean up Hereford city’s wild brooks.
This year, with the support of the Stronger Town’s Fund, we planted over 5,500 bulbs and trees to bring more colour and greater natural space to the centre of the city. We survey the invertebrate populations and sample the water quality. We want a better space for residents and nature.
The brooks face increased pressure from low water flows in summer and pollution in winter.
It is one of the most polluted brooks running into the river Wye Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation, according to citizen science data.

I regret to inform you that the illegal sewage outlet, on the east side of the Yazor Road bridge in Hereford, is, once again pouring into the Yazor brook. After five years of reporting this issue to the Environment Agency, that it still happens.

The solution to the problem is simple. Welsh Water must survey the outlet pipe and stop the culprits. If they fail to do this, the Environment Agency must hold them to account.
Our river is polluted because we failed to stop polluters. It is time for action not words.
