A HEREFORD man who harassed a woman with repeated unwanted contact has avoided being sent straight to prison.

Ionut Anechitei entered a guilty plea to one count of harassment without violence when he appeared in court in January.

The court heard from prosecutor Michael Curry that Anechitei, of Queens Hill Gardens, Hereford, had pursued a course of conduct which amounted to the harassment of a woman in Cardiff between January 17 and May 1 last year.

The 37-year-old, who was represented at the hearing by defence solicitor Neil Evans, had repeatedly contacted her via social media when that contact was unwanted, Cardiff Magistrates Court heard.

The court said the offence was so serious that only a custodial sentence could be justified, but that it would be suspended as there is a realistic prospect of rehabilitation.

Anechetei was handed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years and was ordered to pay compensation of £800.

He was also handed a five-year restraining order banning him from contacting the victim, entering the estate she lives in, or causing or entering any data to be entered online that refers directly or by inference to her.

He must also pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £154 victim surcharge.
