A HEREFORDSHIRE couple who survived a major car crash were left seriously injured after a police officer smashed into their vehicle.

Gwent Police officer Geraint York has been found guilty and convicted of careless driving.

On Saturday, October 9, 2021, William Davies and his wife Farzeen Hashmi, from Kington, were travelling to a cheese shop in Abergavenny on their way for a walk in the Brecon Beacons. During their journey they were the victims of a head-on crash when York tried to overtake another car and ended up colliding with their vehicle.

Mr Davies needed surgery after he suffered a broken back, fractured ribs and a “smashed” left knee, while his wife suffered injuries including whiplash.

Mr Davies, speaking to the Hereford Times after York's conviction, said: "We are satisfied with CPS and police but it seems that this perpetrator thought he could lie and get away with it. A person lied to try and escape accountability.

"My wife, on the cusp of becoming a consultant, may possibly have had her career destroyed, because her injuries, which were minor compared to mine, may mean she won't be able to operate and help patients."

York, 45 and of Llanover Road in Blaenavon, was ordered to pay £750 prosecution costs and a £450 fine, and his driving record was endorsed with six penalty points after a trial at Cardiff Crown Court.
