MY father worked during the 1920s and 1940s as a farm labourer at Hergest Court, near Kington, in Herefordshire.
It was where he met and married my mother, who started work there in 1932 when she was employed as a maid (Hergest Court was inspiration for Hound of the Baskervilles, February 11).

Mother said it was a very haunted house, although one night she heard a ‘thump-thump’ down the stairs only to find out that a rat had carried an apple from the cellar but had dropped it back down, making a noise like footsteps.
She said she never felt happy working there, especially at night.
