A SPECIAL phone box topper has wowed locals in one Herefordshire town.

A woollen display commemorating the eightieth anniversary of the D-Day landings has been placed atop a phone box on Leominster’s Worcester road, not far from the towns railway station.

The memorial decoration was created by ‘the Pom Ladies of Leominster’, who are also set to create a floral display to accompany their work.

The red, white and blue topper features a number of soldiers, poppies, a Red Cross nurse, a crucifix, a military vehicle and a homing pigeon, symbolising many of the different groups involved with the conflict as well as the sacrifices they had to make. The display also pays homage to ‘the canary girls’ war-time munitions workers who often had their skin stained yellow after working with toxic chemicals.

The phone box, affectionately named ‘Walter’, was specifically chosen for the topper as many soldiers would have passed through the nearby station during the course of the Second World War.

Locals have been quick to take to social media to share their appreciation of the commemorative art piece.

Libby Stokes said: “Walked past Walter yesterday and he looks splendid in all his glory, well done to all involved in reviving this old telephone box.”

Jane Robson chimed in, she said: “Walter looked amazing, A lot of details and time must have gone into reviving it.

“Well done to all involved.”

‘Walter’ is maintained by both the Leominster Town Council and Leominster in Bloom, who previously helped install a defibrillator in a phone box on Bargates street.
