An appeal to help families hit by a fire in a Herefordshire town has already raised over £2,000 from 64 donors.

The blaze in Lawnside Road, Ledbury is believed to have forced 12 households to leave their homes.

“Some having lost everything,” the GoFundMe appeal page set up for them says.

MORE LEDBURY NEWS:

Thankfully no one was hurt when the fire yesterday (June 5) morning on the top floor of the three-storey mid-terrace flat spread to the roof space, and had to be tackled by four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using hosereel jets and an extension ladder.

Lisa Fairlie, director of housing operations at Platform Housing which manages the flats, said: “We are actively working with families that were affected by this event, all of whom are either staying in temporary accommodation or are able to stay with family.”

The town’s food bank on the Homend Trading Estate has been collecting and coordinating donations of food and toiletries, while the primary school has also served as a drop-off point for donations.

Town resident Tori Huggins, who has been among those coordinating the response locally, said on Facebook it was a case of “community spirit at its best”.

She thanked Tesco and One Stop as well as individuals for donations of food, toiletries and other goods, and Ledbury Rugby Football Club, “for providing a hot meal, fresh fruit and ice creams so the families were able to have tea”.
