AN UPDATE has been issued in the search for a Hereford arsonist after more than a dozen fires in a city park.

More than 15 fires have been reported in Belmont Country Park in Hereford in the last month, a police spokesperson said, with police attending the area on June 19 in the hunt for those responsible.

Police community support officer Tally Hunt said officers from the local policing team found a man in the area who was stopped and searched but found to have no drugs or matches on him.

But, PCSO Hunt said, the man, who remains unnamed, was identified as a suspect by a local who was in the area and had witnessed the arsons.

"Whilst officers continued to speak to members of the public, more confirmed that the male was responsible for the fires," PCSO Hunt said.

"The male was told by officers that he was not to go into the country park. Relevant action will be taken."

PCSO Hunt said any fires should be reported to the fire service, while any suspicious activity in the area should be reported to police.
