A Herefordshire man’s Scandinavian-inspired cabin, built in the countryside he grew up in, has been featured on a popular Channel 4 show.

The latest episode of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces (available now on Channel 4’s streaming service) featured sheep farmer’s son Matt Pritchard as he embarked on a mission to channel his appreciation for the stunning, Herefordshire countryside he grew up in into a luxurious woodland cabin for visitors, The Fold.

Mr Pritchard wanted his build to emulate the idea of hygge – a sense of cosy and contented mood in Scandinavian design and architecture – and aimed for it to be grounded in the calm, idyllic surroundings he wanted to share with the world. The cabin was to rest on steel stilts, have a fully open-plan living space, large glass windows and doors to bring the outside in, a curved roof and a path, allowing access to the cabin through the woodlands that inspired it. He aimed to achieve this for around £40-£50,000.

Having put in the walls, massive windows and environmentally friendly living roof and solar panels in, the build was all but finished after only four months, helped along by friends Ben and Matt. George Clarke sent his good friend Will Hardie to see how he had got on.

Mr Hardie joked: “George may have travelled to Denmark to explore the best in Scandinavian architecture, but I’ve simply jumped on a train to Hereford.”  Mr Hardie said the creation was truly “amazing,” with Mr Clarke’s voiceover commenting on how “calling this a cabin hardly does the place justice.”

Mr Clarke’s narration continued, to describe how the build impressed with its adoption of Scandinavian design’s understated interior ethos, the outdoor sundeck with a hot tub and sauna and the cabin’s stunning aesthetic overall.

The build may have cost almost double the original budget, but Mr Pritchard said he simply felt that “if you’re doing something, why not do it as well as you possibly can?”. Mr Hardie praised the build, saying he had “done really, really well”.

“I think you should be very proud,” he said.
