LEGOLAND Windsor had a very special family on its visitor books, after one Herefordshire LEGO superfan’s wish was granted.

Seven-year-old Harry Spencer from Herefordshire was born with oesophageal atresia, a rare condition affecting his oesophagus. Harry has already had to undergo more than 90 operations in his lifetime and spend a lot of time in hospital.

“Harry has been in hospital a lot and it really just became the centre of our world,” said Harry’s mum, Georgina Spencer. The family were introduced to children’s charity Rays of Sunshine in 2023, when Harry’s community nurse put him forward for a wish.

The prospect of Harry being granted a wish was “immediately exciting,” Ms Spencer said. “When we told him it was actually happening, Harry actually let out a little squeal.”

“We made him a little countdown chart for him to help him tick off the days” before his wish came true. Rays of Sunshine organised for the family to spend three days and two nights in the park, which allowed the family “enough time to do all of it,” Harry’s mum said.

Because Harry was old enough to get on so many of the rides, “he really threw himself into it,” said Ms Spencer. “I think in some ways that surprised even himself. He walked off some of those rides with a new-found confidence.”

“I’m so glad he was well enough to really enjoy his wish to the full. Beyond Harry’s neck stoma bag and tube feeding, our day-to-day lives really do look a lot like every other family’s.”

Ms Spencer’s highlight was “watching him and his sister make new memories. So much of their lives has been spent in hospitals, and so to see them having new experiences which feel a million miles removed from that was so important to me,” she said.

Dan Assor, chief executive officer of Rays of Sunshine, says: “We’re so glad that Harry’s wish had so many special moments, and that his family could experience the wish together.

“Thank you to LEGOLAND and everyone who supports Rays of Sunshine to make precious memories like this happen for seriously ill children.”
