I am writing in response to a recently published letter concerning a litter problem around Hereford County Hospital (Letters, June 6).

This could not be more accurate, there is a noticeable litter problem, specifically in the centre, which I frequently feel disgusted by. Have locals lost their respect?

Whilst I understand that most areas have some difficulties with ensuring city centres and residential streets are kept in clean and orderly condition, I can’t help feeling Hereford is experiencing a rapid decline in cleanliness.

Commercial Road is frequently left in utter shambles from fast food wrappers and smashed bottles after a boozy Saturday night. Sometimes it seems almost impossible to venture down this street without having a near miss with seagulls fighting over McDonald’s debris or an empty beer can.

Letters should not exceed 250 words and local issues take precedence.

I also feel Hereford’s Commercial Road has been somewhat disregarded when assessing how the city centre can be improved. Although I understand that rents, among other expenses are rising, and small, independent shops are feeling the squeeze more than ever, could the council not being doing more to encourage local businesses to move in?

We have beautiful streets in this city, including Church Street and the surrounding areas. I can’t help but feel that this success could be replicated elsewhere, and perhaps in Commercial Road.

However, for now, what desperately needs to be done to clean up this fly-tipped street and make it a more welcoming environment.
