RECENTLY, I was driving out of Ross-on-Wye via the high street when a group of elderly people stepped out in front of me.

One of the women stopped in the middle of the road and shouted at me to “slow down”, waving her arms and saying: “This isn’t a racetrack.”

But the problem wasn’t my speed, which was well under 20 miles per hour in the 30 zone. Rather, it was the oblivious group of pedestrians who walked out without looking, and a lack of a safe crossing there.

Between the market house and the Man of Ross pub, pedestrians often walk in the middle of the road. If you’ve ever driven down this street in summer when there are tourists in town, you’ll probably have experienced this problem.

To most, it seems obvious not to step in front of oncoming vehicles, but perhaps tourists think this part of town is pedestrianised due to the cobbled streets.

A new zebra crossing in this part of town would be the answer to this problem, as then drivers would be able to anticipate that people might be waiting to cross at a particular point in the road, rather than turning the bend to find several people stepping out.
