A Herefordshire couple are this year celebrating 60 amazing years of their marriage, reminiscing on many happy times spent together and celebrating with their family and friends.

Ann, 85, and Alf Jenkins MBE, 87, had a lovely meal at the Feathers in Ludlow with their family on August 4 to celebrate their wedding anniversary of August 8, and will be having a tea party with friends and neighbours on August 12.

Mrs Jenkins was born in Orleton and Mr Jenkins at Clee Hill. Mr Jenkins feels “extremely lucky to have reasonable health, a very happy life and the best wife in the world”. Mrs Jenkins met Alf at the local Orleton dance when she was 15 - it might have been his National Service army uniform that drew her to him, she said. “Alf always makes me laugh,” she added.

The couple have three children and six grandchildren, with Mrs Jenkins saying they are the proudest achievement of her life. Throughout their marriage, Ann and Alf Jenkins have been “very active in raising money for the local community and church” and have written books and created videos on their local area and its history so that it “wouldn’t be lost.”

The first of eight publications they’ve released was titled “Titterstone Clee Hill, Everyday Life, Industrial History and Dialect” and was published in 1981. The book has had five reprints to date.

Mr Jenkins was headteacher of three schools and Mrs Jenkins a supply teacher, teaching in almost every school in the area. When Mr Jenkins started to experience “deafness”, he began producing Nativity sets and a wide variety of wooden gifts with his beloved wife.

An MBE was awarded to Mr Jenkins in 2008 for his work with the local community and Mrs Jenkins has held numerous roles, including secretary, of Orleton Parish Council, was the first female chairman of Orleton Young Farmers Club and a Brownies leader.

The couple celebrated their happiness by renewing their vows for their 50th anniversary - ten years later, the couple’s love for each other and their community remains as strong as ever.
