CHILDREN could have become sick from being in the river Teme according to a social media post by Ludlow Town Council.

On Friday, August 9 a town council spokesperson said there had been incidents of children potentially becoming unwell after swimming in the water.

They said: "We have been notified this morning of incidents of children potentially becoming unwell. All incidents should be reported on the Environment Agency hotline 0800 807060 which is a 24-hour service.

"Please take a look at advice on swimming and avoiding illness if swimming in the river is not a regular hobby. River water is checked regularly."

These incidents follow the Teme in Ludlow becoming a designated bathing water site earlier this year. The site was added to a UK list of bathing waters in May after Defra's national consultation.

Councillor Beverley Waite said at the time: "Well done to Ludlow Bathing Waters Group for making the application, and we are appreciative of the ongoing work of the staff and volunteers at Severn Rivers, who will be undertaking testing."

According to the Environment Agency, the most recent sample at the time of writing was taken on August 4. There were no active pollution risk forecasts made at this bathing water at the time, but the Environment Agency encourages swimmers to get in touch if they notice visible pollution or contamination.
