A new reservoir is being constructed by a local nursery in a bid to increase sustainability on the site and protect the local Herefordshire environment.
Wyevale Nurseries is forming the new water conservation system at its Container Tree division on King’s Acre Road, to help capture, store, and recycle water.
A reservoir was previously constructed in 2022, which Wyevale said helped to not only attract new species of wildlife to the area but helped to decrease the risk of flooding and increase the amounts of recycled water in the area.
Tim Fawbert, group finance director at Wyevale Nurseries said they were working “diligently” to ensure sustainability and environmental targets were being met.
He added that they have recycled 28 per cent of water used in the main container shrub in the last year, however, to continue the process, they “need this new reservoir”.
“Ponds and reservoirs provide a vital habitat for both aquatic and non-aquatic wildlife.
"Additionally, ponds with good water quality can help to mitigate against climate change by sequestering carbon.
“Ponds help to retain water on the nursery too, which has benefits as a water source for pollinators, irrigation and for natural flood management.
“They also help to soak up heavy rainfall and ameliorate water flows to help protect against flooding, as well as store and release water slowly in drier times to protect against the impacts of drought,” he said.
The nursery will also be planting mixed native hedge, as well as installing bat boxes, and bird and hedgehog nesting boxes to add to the natural habitat.
