Over the last few decades the city has seen many popular establishments shut up shop, with loyal customers left devastated at their favourite local being closed.
All over the country beloved pubs have been suffering for many years, with the price of a pint getting higher, to the population drinking less, several factors have played a part in the demising numbers of pubs across the UK.
The former city centre pub, The Bowling Green, which was based on Bewell Street, was one of the many pubs who suffered with changing times.
The pub was located next to the Hereford Bowling Club, which is described as a lively and active outdoor bowling and social club, and is home to one of the oldest bowling greens in the country, believed to have been founded in 1484, and described as a “hidden gem” of the city.
The former public house next door to the historic green closed its doors for the final time in 2020, and was subsequently occupied by the cocktail bar Lupa, until it closed earlier this year.
Brian Davies posted a photo of the former pub in the We Grew Up in Hereford Facebook group, and previous customers were quick to share their thoughts.
Jean Ramsay, recalling her memories of both the Bowling Green and other local pubs said: “The Bowlers, The Pippin, and The Lich, and eventually The Saracens Head. All great pubs back in the 70s.
“ I remember one Christmas Eve at the Bowlers (think it was 1971) and everybody went outside as the snow started falling about midnight. It was quite magical.”
Commenting underneath the photo, Kerry Rumbelow said: “Spent many a Friday or Saturday evening in here in the 60s.
“Little did I know I was to go and become a bowler on a green in Surrey in retirement.
"I'm far more civilised these days but still enjoy my beer!
“Never ever drunk rum and coke since though!”
John Price expressed his sadness at the closure of the business, saying: "My favourite pub back in the 60/70s. My second home".
