AS the new term starts, Home-Start Herefordshire, a local charity dedicated to child welfare, is introducing a new school readiness programme to help make the transition from nursery to primary school smoother.

Funded by a grant from the Department of Education, it is currently being piloted in eight primary schools and feeder nurseries across Herefordshire. We are very fortunate that Herefordshire has been chosen for this pilot.

Many parents will find preparing their children for this transition challenging. We have found over the years that children who are not fully prepared for primary school in terms of learning, social and emotional development miss out on the many opportunities that school can offer. The programme aims to ensure that every child has the necessary skills and confidence to thrive.

Parents are the key to a child’s successful transition to school. Providing simple steps to nurture and support children will help their preparation for school in September and ensure no child misses out on these early education opportunities.

Understanding the best ways to prepare a child for school each day and adjusting family routines and behaviour accordingly will enhance a child’s readiness to learn and look forward to going to school.

Carefully selected and well-trained volunteers play a crucial role by visiting families in their homes for two or three hours a week, providing guidance and support to help parents develop their skills and confidence.

With the pilot proving successful, the goal is to expand the school readiness programme to reach more families across the county in the upcoming months.
