On arrival, the crew found Jack, a 24-year-old selle Français x shire, standing 18.3hh and weighing about 850kg.
He was lying on his side in the ditch and unable to get back to his feet. Cold and wet, his owners had tried their best to help him up but soon realized they needed assistance. They called their vet, Ellie from Belmont Farm and Equine Vets, and then the fire service.
Jack was sedated to keep him calm, giving the crews time to fit lifting strops and a quick-release harness. With the help of a local farmer and a telehandler, Jack was lifted to safety and placed in an area where Ellie could care for him until he was able to stand.
